OUR
MAIN PROGRAM ... PoCoMo’s Project Reach Out is an AWARD WINNING program and the first mobile drop-in centre and outreach program of its kind
in BC. An innovative program, it connects with youth in the communities
of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Belcarra, and Anmore.
PoCoMo & Project Reach Out were the recipient of the 2008 Crime Prevention and Community Safety award for Community Group/Organization, presented by the Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General.
An evidence-based model, we recognize that there are barriers for street involved youth
accessing traditional services, so with the use of a modified shuttle
bus, Project Reach Out travels after-hours to areas of the community
where youth naturally congregate – parks, skytrain stations,
convenience stores, lacrosse boxes, skate board parks, schools,
etc.
Staffed by a diverse team of adult youth workers, youth mentors
and volunteers, Project Reach Out heads out after-hours and actively
seeks out and engages street involved youth, building relationships that are the catalyst for change.
We engage with youth where they are, on their turf, strengthening their connection
to the community, and help youth make positive choices.
The Reach Out bus is often the first point of contact for many
youth struggling with drugs or other issues and provides a safe
place for youth to talk with a caring youth worker.
Research clearly indicates that safety in community is not only dependent upon the number of Police Officers, Social Workers, or enforcement officers a community has. Rather the number of positive relationships in a person’s life determines safety. The more positive relationships, the safer an individual is. The fewer relationships, the more vulnerable the individual is. Reach Out Project’s main purpose is relationship building. |
